The tablet market is now awash with numerous tablet devices from a variety of different manufactures across the globe. Apple’s iPad will always be at the forefront as the market leader, but that doesn’t always necessarily make it the best tablet. Depending on your needs and budget, there’s a great deal more to choose from, especially if you’re not a huge fan of Apple products – which a fair few people aren’t. With this in mind, let’s take a look at the leading alternative tablets to the iPad.
A tablet that easily rivals the iPad in every aspect, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 utilises the vastly improved Android 4.0 Operating System. Just like the new iPad, the Galaxy Tab 2 is powered by a 1GHz processor. It also boasts a whopping 1280 x 800 LCD pixel-display, which looks perfect on its 10.1 inch screen. In addition, the Tab 2 has a 3.0 megapixel rear facing camera. The price is fairly reasonable too – at £299 it’s much cheaper than the iPad.
Equipped with the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Operating System, the Google Nexus 7 is a fantastic alternative, not to just the iPad itself, but all larger tablets. With its 7 inch screen, it fills a niche in the market for a smaller and far more practical tablet device. Don’t let its demure size fool you though; this is one powerful piece of equipment with its 1.2 – 1.3 GHz processor – making it quick and powerful. It’s the first tablet to use the Chrome browser, making your online browsing experience much faster and hassle-free. It’s also fantastic value at around £200.
With the new iPad boasting retina display, there was a demand for other tablet devices to follow suit, and Acer did exactly that with the Iconia Tab A700. Okay, so it’s pretty identical to the Iconia Tab A510, but Acer decided to slap a 1,920 x 1,200 pixel resolution screen on its 10.1 inch screen size which looks fantastic. Utilising Android’s 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Operating System and boasting a powerful 1.3 GHz Nvidia processor, it’s a great bit of kit. Despite this, it’s slightly more expensive than other tablets, with a price tag ranging between £350 and £400.
Whilst the Acer Iconia Tab A700 provides a great alternative to the high resolution retina display of the new iPad, it does let itself down on the performance front. The processor simply can’t cope with the demands of the screen quality. However, the ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700 is an even better alternative, with its 10.1 inch 1,920 x 1,200 pixel screen. Crucially, it has a fast quad-core Tegra 3 processor, coping with the screen demands effortlessly. It’s slightly pricier at approximately £450 though.
Okay so this one isn’t officially out yet, with the ThinkPad Tablet 2 rumoured to be launched in October (accurate as of August 2012). However, it’s an exciting tablet as it will feature the new Windows 8 Operating System. With an Intel Atom processor, and a modest screen resolution of 1366 x 768, it’s the perfect alternative to both Apple and Android. It will be light, thin, and whilst we have no idea how much it’ll cost, we’re excited about its arrival.
Fast, powerful, reliable and refreshingly cheap, the new Amazon Kindle Fire is a worthy challenger to the dominance of the iPad. It’s only 7 inches in size, whilst boasting a decent resolution of 1024 x 600 IPS – making the clarity nice and crisp, but by no means the best on the market.
Whilst it uses the Android Operating System, you wouldn’t tell because of Amazon’s custom skins. With its Silk web browser, your online experience will be smooth and hassle –free, especially as it’s backed up with 1GHz dual-core processor. And at only £125, it’s certainly going to ruffle a few feathers on the market.
